How to play Minecraft on Linux

Posted on December 24th, 2013

The only requirement in order to play Minecraft on Linux, is that you have downloaded and installed OpenJDK Java 6 or Java 7 Runtime.

Download Minecraft.jar
Head over to, and download the Minecraft.jar file under the Linux / Other category.

Once downloaded, save the file to your /home/username directory (or any folder of your choosing).

Edit Minecraft.jar Properties
Navigate to the folder where you saved the Minecraft.jar file, and right click on it and choose properties. On the Open With tab, change the default application to your OpenJDK Java7 (or 6) Runtime.

Hit Close, and you can now launch Minecraft by double clicking on the .jar file.

Happy Mining!
